Crew: Brian, Pat, Bob & RW
Winds: SE-S at 5 to 8 kts, (short peak at 14)
Current: ebb - North Hill 1230
Start time: 1155
Start/Finish: SW of Horseshoe Reef
Course: s/f-DM-s/f, 3 laps, Distance: 9.0 nm, DM east of North Dumpling
Shrouds: at Base

We chose to start at the committee boat, to be windward of the class and crossed about thirty seconds late.  Our tacks, sets, jibes, douses & roundings were good. Boat speed was down at times which I contributed to the chop and fluky wind.   We finished last, our worst showing in sometime, not even in the hunt

Perplexed and grasping at straws for an explanation- looking at the GPS chart, I find we spent a preponderance of the time west of the rhumbline.  In retrospect, I believe the wind may have been stronger on the eastern side of the rhumbline.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Winds: SW 8 to 0
Current: flood - North Hill 1700
Start time: 1800, 01:00 into flood
Start/Finish: Vicinity of X, Groton Long Point
Course: s/f(I)-E-Ns-s/f, Distance: ### nm
Abandoned between E & N
Shrouds: +1, +2, +1, at start, back to base past North Hill

With a 5 to 10 knot forecast the Race Committee optimistically set a course from Intrepid to Silver Eel and back.  Contrary to the rest of our class, I elected to start on port with the current for greater speed. We ducked Watercolors, cleared and tacked to windward of the fleet.  A minute or so later Sans Souci tacked to port and crossed behind to continue on port a good while prior to returning to starboard.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Winds: ESE at 10 to 15 kts
Current: ebb - North Hill 1524
Start time: 1800, 02:36 into ebb
Start/Finish: Vicinity of X, Groton Long Point
Course: (s/f-I-s/f)*2, Distance: 3.12 nm
Shrouds: +3, +5, +3, possibly another turn on the fwd’s may have helped on the first upwind.

Except for a couple hours mid-day with glimpse of blue sky, it was cloudy all day with an East wind in the single digits during the morning, building into the low teens by mid-afternoon.

Approaching the starting area, I could discern with the binoculars,  posted on the committee boat, a two lapper to Intrepid; a pin end start became obvious. We had a good start in a 12 knot breeze at the pin with Cosmic behind us just to windward, and other than Breakin’ Wind, the rest of the class started down near the committee boat. Within a couple of minutes, the crew popped in the flattening reef which helped immensely in the 12 to 14 knot breeze. Cosmic eventually pulled away to windward. They were sailing very upright compared to us, which may have accounted for their better lift to windward, while we were often at twenty-degrees, occasionally more in the puffs. As Cosmic ahead tacked on the layline, we followed suit short of ninety-degrees, due to an expected overstand from current push. As Brian set the pole for the rounding, Seth & Bob were hiking hard in the 14 knot wind. We rounded with a good set to chase Cosmic down to the leeward mark. Watercolors rounded a good distance behind us with some difficulty in their set.

Watch Hill YC – Fuller Regatta; Saturday, 08/08/09
Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Winds: NW, W to SW at 4 to 12 kts
Current: flood – Napatree Point 0700, ebb 1300
Start time: 1050, finish 1515
Start/Finish: Off the beach of the Ocean House – Watch Hill, RI
Course: 195 degrees at 3.5 nm, 2 laps (shortened from 3)
Distance 14 nm
Shrouds: Base

The various wind forecasts were not very encouraging, 5 to 10 at best.  Though it was to be a beautiful clear day, and with a cool breeze out of the north a possibility of a so-wester building in the afternoon.  We left the dock at 0830 for a posted 1030 start motoring against the flood for nearly 2 hours arriving with little time to spare.  Picking up the scratch sheet from the chase boat, we pieced together the start sequence.  There were only two classes, both spinnaker (A & B), a small turnout typical of the WHYC events and we were to be the last to start.
